Hotel, Mango House, Galle Fort, Sri Lanka
... welcome home
Mango House is a small boutique hotel in Galle Fort.
With a large leafy garden, private balconies and courtyard there are plenty of places to relax.
Your home away from home is a haven in the heart of the historic Fort.
In the heart of the historic Galle Fort, Mango House is a bright and airy Dutch colonial-style villa, mixing old elegance with a hip, contemporary Asian feel.
Once a cinnamon factory belonging to Hayleys, one of Sri Lanka's oldest trading companies, Mango House has been lovingly restored. From hand-made terracotta floor tiles to bespoke furniture, guests at Mango House enjoy a unique experience, bridging the best of colonial-era architecture with funky, modern twists.
Set in a beautiful garden of mango trees and palms, the 7-room boutique hotel offers a peaceful haven for guests within easy walking distance of all Galle Fort’s historic sights, restaurants and shops.
Mango House is located in the heart of what is today a UNESCO world heritage site.
Dating back to the 16th century, Galle Fort has been colonised by the Portuguese, Dutch and British. It was the main gateway to Ceylon and an important trading post along the spice route.
Seafarers and travellers from around the world along with local Sri Lankans have all left their traces and today the Fort is a unique blend of all these cultures with locals and travellers mixing together in the bustling streets.
We try our best to be as environmentally responsible as possible. This can be a challenge in a developing country. But there are many steps to take … and we keep trying to improve ourselves.
At Mango House…
We cut back on plastic by offering guests clean, fresh drinking water in glass bottles and keep bathroom aminiteis in ceramic bottles.
We recycle any plastic we do use, along with glass, cans, paper and cardboard.
We use solar heaters to heat the water for showers and it is our aim to install solar cells to power the ACs in the rooms.
We use organic amenities and like most other items in the hotel, they are sourced locally.
We use energy saving light bulbs and energy saving appliances where possible.
We are working on offering guests the chance to plant a tree on a carbon offsetting plantation we are setting up later this year.
We educate our staff in environmental values, such as recycling and energy saving methods.
We are very happy to offer advice to guests on how best to help preserve the local environment and on “conscientious” tour operators that respect the environment.
We do not encourage visiting zoos, going on elephant rides or visiting other places where wild animals are kept in captivity - but we strongly urge our guests to see animals where they belong – in the wild.
We are also co-founders of Greener Galle, which is an organisation working to better the environment of the local area. Greener Galle is working on setting up proper recycling facilities in Galle area and we organise regular beach clean ups.
